Consuegra - Madrid

Cabo de Gata
Cabo de Gata
After the breakfast we drink a coffee on the terrace above a big sandy beach. We drive to the nearby nature park Cabo de Gata. The coast is very rocky here and the waves are big. As we have a long ride to Madrid today, we don't spend too much time here but rather travel back north. On the way back we stop in a region that reminds of so much of western movies that we are not surprised when we spot a "Mini Hollywood" site along the road. In fact, a model "wild west" city was built and many westerns filmed here. It looks almost authentic. A little further we turn off the road to drive up a hill with a castle on its top. The wind is quite strong so we walk around only briefly. And then comes the trouble. The road is too steep to turn the car around on the top, so I have to drive all the way back in reverse. Soon we reach once again the area of Guadix, and then drive towards Úbeda, a city located on the top of a hill surrounded with millions of olive trees. For hours of driving we've seen nothing but olive trees!
Consuegra - windmills
Consuegra - windmills
On the highway to Madrid we make a brief detour to the city of Consuegra. On the hill above Consuegra there is a fortress with numerous windmills nearby. The ones with which Don Quijote fought, the story says. And numerous tourists that climb to the fortress and the windmills confirm the story!
Madrid
Madrid
We arrive in Madrid and park the car in the underground parking in the very centre. There are many people on the streets celebrating the victory of Real Madrid, the local football club. After the dinner we enjoy the walk to the famous Prado museum and the royal palace. After a long walk we go to find a hotel near the airport, which was no easy task because navigating in the suburbs is quite difficult. We got lost many times. Finally we find a hotel and fall asleep. In a few hours we'll be on a plane heading back home.
